Park Sponsors

UPDATE - CITY SEEKS SPONSORS FOR PARKS AND RECREATION FACILITIES & PROGRAMS

Posted on June 22, 2009
In April 2009, City Council approved a new Parks and Recreation Facility/Program Sponsorship Policy as a way to provide for greater community participation and involvement, along with a source to obtain outside funding to maintain City recreation programs and facilities.

5th & Oak StreetThe policy allows the City to partner with private businesses, individuals and community organizations as a way to support recreation facilities and programs. As part of the 2009 Budget process, City Council decreased the amount of funding available for maintenance of the smaller neighborhood parks.

Over the last month, eight City parks have been sponsored by these four organizations:

•  Carroll Realty: "A" Street lookout, "C" Street lookout, and Milwaukee Heights Tot-Lot.

•  ReMax Realty Team: Georgiana Park, located at Chambers & Georgiana Streets

•  Port Angeles Disc Golf Association: James View Point located at West 2 nd and Laurel Street

•  Lincoln High School Faculty, Staff and Students: Wolverton Park located at West 11 th off "A" Street

•  Olympic Peninsula Paddlers: Sail & Paddle Park and Harborview Park, both located on Ediz Hook

Other organizations have shown interest in sponsoring Hazel Porter Kiel Park located on the 100 block of West 13 th Street, and Rains Park located in the 900 block of East 8 th Street. Parks still in need of sponsorship are: Charles R. Willson Park located at 511 West 7 th , the 5 th & Oak Street Park, and Crown Park located in the 2000 block of West 4th Street.

The policy allows the City to partner with private businesses, individuals and community organizations as a way to support recreation facilities and programs. As part of the 2009 Budget process, City Council decreased the amount of funding available for maintenance of the smaller neighborhood parks.

Sponsors must comply with guidelines and procedures of the policy and support the mission and policies of the City of Port Angeles.

Skate Board Park
Skate Board Park project in progress.

Have you heard the buzz? Our skate park is known as one of the top skate parks within the Pacific Northwest thanks to its three-bowl layout and extra smooth concrete.

While the City of Port Angeles donated the land space for the skate board park, the Rotary Club headed the fund raising process for the $200,000 project. Ground was broken on the project in April 2005 with the park being officially open on Labor Day of 2005.

The park will be open daily from 8am until dusk and is now under the managed by the City Recreation Division of the Public Works Department.

Call 360-417-4550 or email for more information about the operation of the park.

Contractor was Dreamland Skatepark Design & Construction from Oregon. Please contact these Rotary members for more information about the building and design of the facility:

Scholarships
A limited number of scholarships are available for youth of all ages. These scholarships are made available as a result of Recreation fundraisers and other donations. Scholarship eligibility is based on income level and number of individuals in the family. Applications are available at the Recreation office. Each application is evaluated individually - there is no assurance of receiving a scholarship.

If approved, the individual will receive and amount based on income, up to $50.00, in order to participate in a class or other recreational activity. There is a limit of one scholarship per individual per quarter (3 month period) for a program, activity, class or event. The only exception to this rule is for Recreation sponsored programs that extend for more than three months, (e.g. After School Rec X'press program). A weekly or monthly amount can be received based upon eligibility. Scholarships are limited to individuals only. Groups or organizations are not eligible to apply.

Managed creatively and safely,
Recreational programs and cultural programs
broaden individual human potential.
