CASE UPDATE: ANTHONY W. JOHNSON CHARGED
On April 28, 2022 after reviewing the case the prosecutor charged Anthony W. Johnson, age 44, of Port Angeles with Two Counts of Assault 2 with a Deadly Weapon and two counts of Assault 3 of a Police Officer all with Deadly Weapon Enhancements.
On Thursday, April 28th, 2022 at about 1:20 AM, Officer Luke Brown and Officer Kyle Buchanan (in the photos below) responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at a trailer park in the 1200 block of West Highway 101. While the officers were standing outside of a trailer talking through a screen door to a woman inside the trailer, a man emerged from the area near the parked police cars with a tomahawk in one hand and a large fixed blade hunting knife in the other hand. The man approached the officers in an aggressive fighting stance with both edged weapons raised. An Officer ordered the man to stop, to which that man responded "No," as he continued his advance. As the Officers drew their sidearms and prepared to use them to stop the attack they gave the man, who was now less than fifteen feet from the officers, one last command to stop, and in that split second the man stopped advancing, but refused to drop his weapons. The officers did not fire their sidearms. During a tense standoff the man dropped the tomahawk, but would not drop the knife. But rather, he inserted the knife into a sheath that was on a chest rig he was wearing. One Officer actuated his Taser. However the Taser was ineffective because one of the darts bounced off of the knife sheath on the chest rig. The man turned to flee, but was stopped with an effective hit from the second Officer's Taser. When one Officer moved to remove the suspect's knife from the sheath the man sat up quickly and reached for his knife. That attack was stopped with a swift kick to the chest by one of the Officers. An Elwha Police Officer arrived and assisted with placing still struggling and resisting man into handcuffs. The man was booked into jail. The prosecutor is reviewing the case.
