The USA BMX DK Northwest Gold Cup Finals, held on September 16-18, 2022, was a huge success for the Port Angeles community. Nearly 8,500 people, with representatives from 11 different states, attended the three-day event hosted by the Lincoln Park BMX Association (LPBMX) and City Parks & Recreation. Many of the 671 riders qualified to move on to the next big race. Compared to previous Gold Cup Series races, this event showed an increase of over 500 spectators who traveled to our area to watch and support their riders. With so many visitors, campsites at Lincoln Park were filled and local lodging facilities were fully booked, with an estimated total of 1,900 rooms rented in Port Angeles.
We would like to express our gratitude towards the Port Angeles community, who opened their arms to riders coming into town with countless welcome signs and a large spectator turnout. We would also like to thank the Lincoln Park BMX and USA BMX crews for their amazing efforts throughout the weekend event.
Sean Coleman, Track Operator, says, “The Track Crew & USABMX crew were spot on! This track doesn’t climb the ranks of USABMX without an amazing group to work every job. Glamorous or dirty—they get it done. We know people travel a long way to get here, whether it be for a practice or a large race, and our crew works to make sure everyone has a great time and wants to come back. Thank you to our hardworking guys and gals!”
Carter Droz, LPBMX City Representative says, “Port Angeles thrives on events like the Gold Cup, and it is thanks to our active community that we are able to host such exciting and fun events. It takes a lot of time and dedication to make these events successful, and we are fortunate enough to have people who rise to the occasion to make it happen. I am overjoyed that our small city has become such a staple of the northwest, and I look forward to watching it continue to grow!”
