“City Shade” Street Tree Program - Apply Now to Volunteer or Request a Free Tree!

City Shade

The City is proud to announce the launch of the “City Shade” Street Tree Program, an initiative developed by community member Paul Forrest in partnership with the City of Port Angeles. As part of this program, residents of Port Angeles may apply online to request a free tree for planting within our neighborhood rights-of-way (typically between the sidewalk and curb).

The City Shade Program aims to increase the tree canopy in our community by planting trees in low, medium and high-density residential neighborhoods. This strategic initiative supports the growth of our urban forest and aligns with the City’s long-term sustainability and Climate Resiliency Plan goals.

Approximately 250 trees grown at the City Shade Nursery will be available for planting on October 14, 2023. The species available include English Oak (Quercus robur), Golden Rain (Koelreutaria paniculata) and Japanese Pagoda Tree (Styphnolobium japonicum).

Apply to Request a Free Street Tree or Participate as a Program Volunteer

The 2023 City Shade Program application period is now open. City residents may apply online to request a free tree for planting within Port Angeles neighborhood rights-of-way. Those interested may also apply to participate in the program as a volunteer. Initial opportunities include assisting in the September 16th demonstration and October planting and tree distribution (more event details below). Future volunteer opportunities include coordinating neighborhood street tree maintenance and helping out at the City Shade Nursery.

Is Your Neighborhood Interested in Serving as a Tree Planting Demonstration Site? Contact us!

The City Shade Program is seeking two groups of neighbors interested in planting 10+ trees on one block. These blocks will serve as training and demonstration sites for a Tree Planting Workshop to be held on September 16th (more event details below).

Trees will be approximately one inch in diameter at 4” above the base, roughly 6’ tall, and arrive in a #5 nursery pot with bamboo pole. City Shade Tree-Planting Volunteers may assist any applicant with the  planting of the trees, if requested in advance. Weekly watering (during the first two summers), pruning and leaf raking will be the resident’s responsibility.

If interested, please contact the Department of Community & Economic Development at ced@cityofpa.us using the subject line “Tree Demo Site.”

Save the Date: Upcoming Workshops and Events

September 16th Workshop: To ensure the success of the program, the City has partnered with the Washington State Department of Natural Resources to host a community workshop on September 16th. Attendees will learn tree-planting and maintenance techniques from experts, connect with like-minded individuals, and contribute directly to the growth of our urban forest.

October 14th Community Planting: The City of Port Angeles invites residents to attend the inaugural City Shade Street Tree Community Planting on October 14th! More details are soon to be announced.
