- Laurel Street Stairs Replacement
Laurel Street Stairs Replacement Project
In 2001, early signs of structural wear became noticeable on the Laurel Street stairs. That year, the City Council authorized the Laurel Street Stair Replacement Project No. TR0101 in the Capital Facilities and Transportation Improvement Plan. Funding for the design of this project was secured in the City’s 2023-2024 budget and, over the last two years, City staff has been working with RWD Landscape Architects on two conceptual designs.
Once this project is complete, the existing Laurel Street Stairs will be replaced with easy-to-maintain materials.
Provide Your Input on Design Options
The City of Port Angeles invites residents to weigh in on two, conceptual design options for the Laurel Street Stairs Replacement Project.
The Online Survey is Now Closed as of March 10, 2026.
At the Parks, Recreation & Facilities Commission meeting on February 19, City staff and RDW Landscape Architects presented a brief history of the Laurel Street Stairs Replacement Project and introduced two conceptual design options. Community members in attendance were then invited to share feedback on those designs through an onsite activity.
If you missed the meeting, you can watch the recorded presentation online and share your thoughts by completing the online survey by Monday, March 9.
Feedback received will be shared with the Commission for review before the next meeting on March 19. On that day, the Commission is expected to select one design for recommendation to the City Council.

Located in the heart of downtown Port Angeles, at the intersection of First Street and Laurel Street, is the Conrad Dyar Memorial Fountain. This park was named in memory of former Port Angeles City Park Board Chairman Conrad E. Dyar, and includes the Laurel Street Stairs, which connect pedestrians from First Street to Second Street.
The main park area was rebuilt in 1983 and features many sitting areas, a fountain, flagpole, and flower baskets/bowls. A mural was later installed by local artists in 1999 and covers the wall behind the fountain. The park is a well-visited gathering place for shoppers and others in the downtown area and is one of the first things visitors see when arriving to Port Angeles via the Coho ferry.
