Connection to Action—A Message from City Manager Nathan West"Each year, I end the 'State of the City' with a challenge for you, our residents and everyone invested in our community. Last year, my challenge to you was to build community connections: to embrace, to step up, to reach out and support your family, friends, and local organizations in Port Angeles. This year, I’m asking you to take those connections and do something a little bigger, a little better, and sometimes a lot more challenging. I’m asking you to help shift the energy. When you see family and friends spending their time behind screens posting negative comments about our community, encourage them to take that energy and convert it into action on behalf of our community. So many of you already do this. You’re putting your energy in the right place. Now let’s challenge others to do the same. Because whether its local organizations leading community projects or individuals giving their time in small but meaningful ways, we can all make a difference. Let’s get out from behind those screens and get involved." -Nathan West, City Manager

Partnership leads to continued improvements at Lincoln ParkBallfield renovations at Lincoln Park are now complete! All eight bull pens and the softball batting cage have been updated. These updates will make use of artificial turf and portable pitching mounds, which in turn, will lower maintenance costs and create a safer environment for athletes. This is in addition to recent roadway and parking improvements within the park, newly installed park entrance signage, an upgraded coaching box, two new scoreboards, and ADA restroom improvements. Most recently, durable infield dirt called Diamond Dust was installed, not just at Lincoln Park, but also Shane Park and Civic Field. We extend our sincere thanks to North Olympic Baseball and Softball, Port Angeles Youth Baseball, Nor'Wester Rotary Club of Port Angeles, the Port of Port Angeles, the Port Angeles School District, and Clallam County Parks for their partnership and collaboration in helping improve our ballparks and provide better recreational spaces for our youth athletes. It’s time to PLAY BALL!

Welcoming Vista Efforts ContinueLast month, the City of Port Angeles, the Port Angeles Waterfront District, and community volunteers installed 500 shrubs in an area that was previously cleared of invasive species. These ongoing efforts are part of a 10-year management plan to provide bluff stabilization, reduce stormwater runoff, provide habitat to birds and other wildlife, and improve the view as you first enter the Waterfront District. Staff and volunteers will continue to monitor the area throughout the summer to ensure the plants thrive during the dry season. Please stay tuned for future opportunities to volunteer or contact Director of the Port Angeles Waterfront District Sam Grello at director@pawaterfront.org.

Update—Laurel Street Stairs Replacement ProjectEarlier this month, the City of Port Angeles conducted a survey to gather feedback on conceptual design options for the Laurel Street Stairs Replacement Project. Over a two-week period, we received an incredible 900 survey responses. We thank all community members who took the time to provide feedback. A preliminary review of responses highlighted several key words and interests amongst community members, including “fountain and water features,” “project cost and budget,” “public safety and security,” “color and visual aesthetics,” and “mural artwork and design.” Results showed a near even split in preference between Option A (Monumental Stairs) and Option B (Community Plaza). Given the volume of input received, the City is taking additional time to carefully compile and analyze the data. “This is an important project for the community, and we want to take our time and get it right,” said Director Corey Delikat. During the Parks, Recreation & Facilities Commission meeting on March 19, the Commission moved to form a sub-committee consisting of three Commissioners, City staff, and local stakeholders. This group will further deliberate the conceptual design options incorporating the public feedback received. The entire Commission will revisit this topic at a future meeting, at which time a design recommendation is expected to be made to the City Council. Once the design is approved and finalized, City staff will pursue grant funding for construction.

Stay Engaged: Attend the April 7 Work Session on Camping and EncampmentsThe City of Port Angeles recognizes ongoing challenges related to public safety, and we understand how critically important this topic is to our community. Over the last several weeks, City Council has heard from thirteen local organizations on the issues of camping and encampment. These presentations will culminate in a dedicated work session on Tuesday, April 7, from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m., to discuss possible solutions. While there won’t be an opportunity for public Q&A during this work session, residents are encouraged to attend to hear the discussion firsthand and stay engaged as we work to address these complex matters. Like all regularly scheduled City Council meetings, Tuesday’s regular meeting will include two opportunities for members of the public to offer comments. - Date: Tuesday, April 7
- Time: Work Session from 4:30 to 6 p.m.; Regular meeting at 6 p.m.
